Shot around Kabul and at FBMI’s production house in Afghanistan for a photo essay featured in Disegno Magazine. The FBMI Initiative was launched in 2010 and employs local Afghani women to hand-weave carpets using age-old techniques that might otherwise cease to exist. Since its launch, FBMI has hired more than 3,000 Afghani artisans, 70 per cent of whom are women, and 35 per cent of whom are widows ( the sole breadwinners in their families ). FBMI also provides free health and child care for its employees and families and conducts social education programs throughout the country to try to help improve gender inequality and domestic violence issues that are quite common throughout rural Afghanistan.
